The History.

Produced by John Middleton Co., a tobacco company located in King of Prussia, PA dating back to the 1850’s, Black and Mild originated in 1968 when John Middleton Co. began making pipe-tobacco cigars from its authentic Cherry Blend tobacco and became known as Middleton’s Cherry Blend cigars. In 1980, Middleton began making cigars from another blend of their popular pipe-tobacco blends – and Black and Mild was born to become their second cigar brand – and the most popular on store shelves by 1996.

In 1997, Middleton began manufacturing their cigars in their second location in Limerick, PA.

A decade later, John Middleton Co. became a subsidiary of Altria Group, the parent company of Phillip Morris - and remains one of Altria’s top selling brands today.

The Brand.   

Anyone who’s ever smoked a Black and Mild or been around someone who does is familiar with the pleasant sweet aroma that Black and Mild’s are well-known for. The original concept of producing the cigars was to also appeal to pipe smokers and enjoy the taste of pipe tobacco without the need for a pipe, nor the scraping and cleaning of one at an affordable price. Their newest slogan, “Tastes Great! Smells Great!” was recently introduced to highlight the sweet smell from the smoke.

Wrapped in a homogenized wrapper and comprised of an inner and outer component both pressed together and filled with golden Virginia pipe tobaccos, you can find Black and Mild’s sold in plastic tip, wood tip, untipped, filter-tipped, short and little cigar versions all sold in convenient 5-packs and singles. Over the years, Middleton has added many different varieties to their line of mild cigars.

According to the Maryland Tobacco Resource Center, one Black and Mild cigar contains between 100 and 200 milligrams of nicotine. (The average cigarette contains 8-10 mg of nicotine.) They are meant to be smoked like a cigar, where one does not inhale the smoke, yet puff on them and roll the smoke around in their mouth. The flavoring that is added to the tobacco, combined with the smoke, provides the consumer a pleasant smoking experience.

Those new to smoking Black and Mild’s will find starting with a regular or original wood-tip first to be the best way to try one for the first time for an east draw. If you favor more of a flavored tobacco, one of Middleton’s delicious blends like Cream or Casino would be better suited, depending on your taste preference. The wood tip makes it easier to hold in your mouth, and you can taste the blend of tobacco and smoke fairly easy.

In the cigar world, Black and Mild are considered to be some of the least “offensive” of gas station cigars to those who smoke premium cigars, due to the black cavendish pipe-tobacco used to make them.

The Varieties.

Blues

Mild bodied with the taste of mint. 

Casino

Cocoa, chocolate and a hint of spice. 

Deluxe

 Classic Black and Mild taste combined with the taste of chocolate.

Jazz

Sometimes compared to Summer Blend, Jazz has its own unique fruity flavor with a sweet aroma.

 Original

 The Original - made from the special blend of Black Cavendish and Golden Virginia tobaccos grown in Pennsylvania, giving smokers a delightful alternative to the pipe while still offering the pleasant, strong flavor of tobacco that the pipe is known for.   

 Wine

Black & Mild Wine pipe tobacco cigars feature Black Cavendish, and Virginia tobaccos, touched with the sweet warm taste of a full flavor red vino.  

Sweets

Sweets is a more traditional cigarillo taste made from primarily air cured tobacco touched with a sweet taste. . Mellow and smooth - great to smoke anytime of the day.

Apple 

Smooth, sweet and as tasty as a slice of apple pie. 

Cream

The subtle warmth and milky, fresh cream flavor are the perfect complement to the mild aroma of the pipe tobacco.  Possibly the most decadent of the Black and Mild line.

Cherry Blend

Made from a light and dark Virginia blend, combined with the taste of cherry liqueur. A bit spicy, and just a touch of tart, great for a smoke anytime of the day. 

Gold & Mild

Middleton's famous blend of tobacco's combined with a nutty taste and kissed with a touch of vanilla.

PA Cherry Vanilla

The delicious taste of vanilla with the perfect hint of tart and sweet.

PA Soft Vanilla

The mellow combination of Burley, Virginia, and black Cavendish touched with a splash of vanilla flavor and a fruity, complex undertone. 

Natural Wrap Wood Tip – Original and Wine

Classic Black and Mild taste, wrapped in a natural-leaf wrapper and finished with a wood tip. 

Royale

Mild smoke rich in taste and coupled with a creamy finish. 

Select

Sweet,smooth smoke with a slight fruity after taste that lasts through the whole burn.

Shorts - Regular and Wine

 Same great flavor as Original and Wine, just in a shorter cigar. Shorts were first introduced as "Fast Break" in Black and Mild's cigar line. Shorts were made for the smoker who didn't have the time to smoke a whole cigar.

Filter Tip - 110 and 85

Same classic taste of a Black and Mild all rolled in a 110 or 85 mm small cigar - with a filter tip.
